The Adult Education program at Bishop State Community College is changing lives one student at a time. This Spring, 31 students graduated with their GED and another 14 students graduated after earning their Nontraditional High School Diploma Option. The halls of the adult education department are filled with stories of determination and perseverance. Each student has their own story of how they got to where they are today and goals for how their tomorrow will look. Nell Blocker, a 2018 GED graduate, shared her story with those who attended the Adult Education graduation. Nell is a 45-year-old wife and mother of two who finished 9th grade 28 years ago. She explained to the crowd she quit school, got pregnant, and married "the best man [she] knew." As she cared and nurtured her family, she never lost her dream of one day graduating. After being at her job for 12 years, Blocker decided to make a change in her life and wanted to move up in her career. She applied for a new position at her job and was approved to start the paperwork and interviews, even though her employer knew she did not have a high school diploma. Nell completed the process to attain the new job and even told four doctors she worked for she was leaving. But just as she was about to transition to her new job, she was told she had to get her GED – and she only had 60 days to get it. Although the odds tried to stack up against her, Nell pushed through and was able to get her GED. Even though they gave her 60 days to complete and pass the test, she only needed three weeks. She is now one step closer to changing her life and the life of her family. "This was the hardest thing I had ever done," Nell told the crowd as she thought about the process. "28 years of not being in school – but I did it!" As she fought through tears, Nell began to thank those who helped her along the way. "I want to thank my teacher and best friend, Robin Chestnutt," Nell said as she began to choke up. "Ms. Pat who kept me going for every test. I love you, Ms. Pat. I also want to thank my family for always being there for me." Our motto is Bishop State is "A GREAT place to start." Just ask Nell. She was able to get a new start at Bishop State and you can too!
