The new $135 million Walmart distribution center in Mobile County is now open. The massive 2.5-million-square-foot center will serve 700 stores in Alabama, Mississippi and beyond. Walmart recognized Bishop State and several other companies and businesses during its grand opening on Tuesday, August 14, 2018. The College received a $2,500 Community Partner grant for its role in helping the corporation hire its current 575 employees. Walmart is looking to hire another 125 more employees in the next year or so. "When they called my name and said Bishop State Community College, the crowd clapped and gave us a welcoming ovation," said Bishop State President Dr. Reginald Sykes. "To me, that means they realize the support and the skilled workforce Bishop State is providing our community." Bishop State joined forces with Walmart in February of 2018 to host one of the company's several meet-and-greets with the community. It was an opportunity for people to come out and meet with Walmart’s management team and explore the variety of opportunities available at the new Walmart import distribution center. Attendees learned about Walmart’s wages, benefits, and opportunities for advancement within the company. More than 400 associates attended the grand opening ceremony, chanted and clapped as Walmart officials and lawmakers gave speeches. [gallery columns="1" ids="15323"]
