Mobile, AL – Bishop State Community College helped sponsor SAWDC’s (Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council) Worlds of Opportunity Career Expo held September 21-22, 2016 in Mobile, AL. The college participated as both a sponsor and partner of the event. The expo brought together approximately 10,000 8th graders to learn hands on about career opportunities available to them in the future. Students took part in mock demonstrations of various professions, learned about education requirements, and also the average salary ranges for jobs in different fields.

The career paths were categorized as different “Worlds.” Bishop State participated as a partner in the “Worlds” of Automotive Technology, Engineering and Design, Healthcare, Hospitality and Tourism, and also Manufacturing. Both students and instructors from Bishop State worked together during the demonstrations with the 8th graders giving them hands on exposure to a variety of professions. The Worlds of Opportunity event introduced the students’ to career paths which did not all require a 4 year degree in order to be successful. Bishop plans to continue working with SAWDC on a variety of workforce development initiatives.
