Bishop State, the Federal Highway Administration, and the Alabama Department of Transportation are collaborating to provide the Heavy Highway Construction Training program.This six-month pilot program will provide students an opportunity to work Monday – Thursday with local construction companies in the Mobile and Baldwin County area. In the morning, roughly from 7 a.m. to Noon, students will earn paid, on-the-job training and in the afternoon, from 1:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., students will come to the Bishop State Southwest Campus to learn more about heavy highway construction from instructors who have worked in this specific industry.

Potential students must be:

  • 18 years old or older
  • Be willing to take and pass a drug test
  • Must have taken the ACT test with a score of 18 higher within the last three years OR taken the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) and tested at a 6-grade level or higher

If neither of these requirements has been met by the student, after he or she completes an application, potential students will have an opportunity to take the TABE test at Bishop State before being fully accepted into the program.

Class Offerings

The Heavy Highway Construction Training program is set to begin in March 2020 and scholarships are available to everyone who applies.
