Mobile, Alabama – Bishop State Community College is hosting the ZAC Water Safety Camp during Spring break from April 11-14, 2016 in the Aquatics Center of the Fredricka G. Evans Cultural Center on the main campus. The camps were started by the parents of Zachary Archer Cohn who was a six year old that drowned in a pool accident in 2007. His parents founded the ZAC Foundation and developed the ZAC Water Safety Camp. For the past three years, the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama has received grants to host the ZAC Camps for youth 6-9 years. Most of the participants are members of the Boys & Girls Clubs throughout Mobile County. Bishop State Community College has partnered with the camps over the last 3 years and the partnership continues this year.

There are three components to the camp. They are water safety instruction, classroom work, and presentations by first responders. Some of the presenters include first responders from the Mobile Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, Mobile Police Department, etc. The camp exposes children to aquatic activities that might otherwise not have the opportunity. The focus on safety ensures that the participants learn how to participate safely in aquatic events.
