April 5th, 2013

Bishop State Community College President James Lowe, Jr., was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s prestigious Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction during the Society’s 96th Annual Convention on Friday, April 5, 2013, in San Jose, Calif.

Named in honor of Phi Theta Kappa’s (PTK) longest serving Board Chairperson and a founder and longtime President of Highline Community College in Des Moines, Washington, just south of Seattle, Washington, the award is based on the recipient’s outstanding support of Phi Theta Kappa. Lowe was nominated by Bishop State’s Phi Theta Kappa Chapter.

During the convention, Lowe attended a special recognition luncheon held in his honor. He received his award before an audience of nearly 3,600 students, chapter advisors, and college presidents during the Third General Session. Following the luncheon, he was escorted to a private photo opportunity with Third General Session guest speaker, tennis great Billie Jean King.

The Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction recipients will be featured on the Phi Theta Kappa website and in several Phi Theta Kappa publications.
