Bishop State Community College, in collaboration with the South West Alabama Partnership for Training and Education and the U.S. Department of Labor, is excited to announce the February dates for the Fix It program. Sign up is now underway for the second class which will begin on February 18, 2019. Classes will be held Monday through Friday from 8:30 until 3:30 with an hour for lunch. Fix It is designed to prepare income-eligible out-of-school youths between the ages of 17-24 to enter the highly competitive construction industry as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and painters. Participants can also choose to learn about the auto body repair industry. Bishop State will train qualified candidates over a 10 to 25-week period which will result in certification in their chosen field of study. After completing an initial workforce readiness course and passing a drug screening, successful candidates will be awarded $300 to buy tools for their selected course of study. Once a participant is training in his or her field, they will also be paid a stipend of $20 per day while completing more focused study and on-the-job training with potential employers. A limited number of spots are available for the Fix It program. Those who are interested in participating must apply before the program begins on February 18, 2019. Applicants will be required to visit the Bishop State Southwest Campus for an initial interview where they will fill out an application and be given additional information about the program.
