MOBILE, Ala., July 24, 2025 – Bishop State Community College is continuing to combat food insecurity, this time by stepping outside the campus gates. As part of its Food Insecurity Initiative and in connection with its recently awarded $7,000 IMPACT Grant, Bishop State’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society has launched a new volunteer program in partnership with Love All Pantry, a local food pantry serving families across Mobile.

Through this partnership, teams of Bishop State students, faculty, and staff volunteer twice a month at Love All Pantry, helping to prepare and pack food boxes that support more than 750 families each week. The project began in May 2025 and has already seen an inspiring level of participation from departments, student organizations, and classrooms across campus.

“This program is an extension of the work we began with the Food Security Initiative,” said Lydia Host, PTK Advisor and Art Instructor. “It’s not just about what we’re doing for our campus. It’s about how we can extend our reach and support our entire community.”

Since launching, the following Bishop State groups have rolled up their sleeves and gotten to work:

  • Social Sciences Department
  • Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society
  • ESA Student Service Organization
  • Finance Department
  • Executive Council and Board Members
  • Speech and Art 100 Classes
  • Health Sciences Division
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) Department

The effort reflects the spirit of service that drives Bishop State’s Food Insecurity Initiative, a student-led, college-wide movement to ensure students and community members alike have access to healthy food options and resources.

Join the Movement! Faculty, staff, students, and community friends are encouraged to get involved and join the growing list of volunteers making a real difference in the Mobile area. Whether you sign up as a department, class, or group of friends, your time and effort will directly impact local families in need.

“We’re proud of how our campus community has embraced this opportunity to give back,” said Bishop State President Olivier Charles. “This kind of hands-on service is what makes Bishop State more than a college and makes us a force for good in the lives of those around us.”

The Love All Pantry Volunteer Project is one more example of Bishop State’s continued growth, impact, and commitment to meeting the needs of our students and our community.
