BIRMINGHAM, AL – (March 5, 2025) – Alabama Possible, a statewide nonprofit committed to removing barriers to prosperity, announces the release of a groundbreaking series of seven case studies highlighting Alabama’s six Historically Black Community Colleges (HBCCs) and two Predominantly Black Community Colleges (PBCCs) – collectively known as the Great Eight. These case studies, made possible with funding from the ECMC Foundation, offer a comprehensive examination of the pivotal role these institutions play in shaping the state’s higher education landscape and workforce development.
Alabama has the highest number of HBCCs and PBCCs in the nation, serving as a cornerstone of access to postsecondary education for under-resourced students and adult learners. These institutions significantly impact Alabama’s talent pipeline, equipping students with the skills and credentials needed to strengthen the state’s workforce and economy.
“The Great Eight are not just institutions of learning; they are engines of economic mobility and workforce innovation,” said Chandra Scott, Executive Director of Alabama Possible. “These case studies provide national philanthropic leaders, policymakers, and educators with an in-depth look at how these colleges are uniquely positioned to drive both academic and economic success in Alabama and beyond.”
The research enriches existing higher education and workforce development literature by offering data-driven insights into the challenges and opportunities facing HBCCs and PBCCs. The case studies examine institutional leadership, student success initiatives, workforce alignment, and community impact—critical factors that contribute to the evolving landscape of postsecondary education and workforce readiness.
Through the support of ECMC Foundation, Alabama Possible is proud to elevate the stories and successes of these institutions, reinforcing their importance in ensuring equitable access to education and career opportunities.
