As the Bishop State women’s golf team enters its second season, it is a time for growth and for both current and new players.
Returning sophomore and 2018 44th nationally ranked golfer, Rev Lizabeth Alcantara, has competed in two fall events — the Black College Golf Coaches’ Association 2018 Gulf Shores Collegiate Invitational and the Jefferson State Community College Fall Golf Tournament. The Gulf Shores Collegiate Invitational featured all four-year colleges and universities. Alcantara was the only female competitor from a two-year institution. She was able to finish the two-round event with the seventh overall female low score of 79, 80 respectfully. At the Jefferson State event played at the Robert Trent Jones Oxmoor Valley Golf Course, she had the low overall score of 79, 71(1 under par) respectfully in the two-day event. Her score was 16 strokes lower than any competitor in the field of 30 players.
Alcantara has committed to Alabama State University for the fall 2019 academic year. In addition, Alcantara is an outstanding student-athlete and has earned the distinction of First-Team Academic All-American from the National Junior College Athletic Association in 2018. Throughout her academic coursework, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA.
“We are expecting great play out of Rev this year.” says golf head coach Ronald Davis. “Her goal is to return to the national tournament and finish in the top 10 to earn All-American Status.”
Coach Davis has also been busy working to grow the Bishop State golf program. The women’s team is expected to be double it’s current size for the 2019-2020 season after obtaining two verbal commits from Sarah Jane Shearer (Alma Bryant High School- Mobile, AL) and Hassen Dorsey (D’Iberville High School- Gulfport, MS). Both athletes are devoted to improving their golf skills and learning to better manage their play which leads to improved scoring.
When asked about his latest recruits, Coach Davis says, “We are excited to have them join our Wildcat Family for the 2019-2020 season!”
