Bishop State among top 10 most affordable HBCUs

MOBILE, Ala., (September 30, 2018) — Student Loan Hero ranks Bishop State Community College as one of its most affordable HBCUs in the U.S.

Mobile’s community college is ranked No. 7 among 98 historically black colleges and universities in the U.S., according to the website. The colleges on the list were ranked based on their annual tuition costs, admissions and enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year reported and the urban and state cost-of-living data from 2017.

“It’s important to consider tuition costs before choosing a college,” said Rebecca Safier, Student Loan Hero’s lead researcher on the study. “By looking at net cost of attendance before selecting a school, students and their families can avoid taking on too much student debt for a college degree. These rankings show you can earn your degree at one of the country’s historically black colleges and universities without breaking the bank.”

Study Methodology

Student Loan Hero collected the above data on July 26, 2018. We relied on data from the NCES on annual tuition costs, admissions, enrollment, and more for HBCUs for the 2017-18 school year. We also relied on C2ER’s urban and state cost-of-living data from 2017 and sourced additional information from official college websites. For the full list of HBCUs for undergraduates, we ranked the colleges from lowest annual cost of tuition and fees for in-state students to highest.
