Exciting Summer Camps For Youth At Bishop State

CAMP WILDCAT

Bishop State Community College will host a series of youth camps and other events this summer. Applications and other information will be available at all schools, church youth groups and youth organizations. Please identify camp(s) on the Registration Form. REGISTRATION: Main Campus, new Business Technology Center, 351 No. Broad Street, Mobile , AL 36603 , May 21 – 25. Fasttrax Piano Playing Camp -- If you yearn to experience the joy of playing piano, but you don't want years of weekly lessons, this short course is for you. In just one enjoyable evening, you can learn enough secrets of the trade to make piano playing a part of your life, learning chords, not notes. You'll learn all the chords needed to play any song, any style, any key. And, you'll get a healthy dose of insider secrets, how to embellish songs. This is an absolutely beginning class in chord piano techniques, and if you can find middle C and know the meaning of “Every Good Boy Does Fine”, you already know enough to enroll. Then, register with confidence! Instructor will collect $25 in class for a book and 68-minute practice CD. Ages 14 to adult at any age. Youth Entrepreneurial Academy -- MIDDLE SCHOOLERS : Say "YEA" for the Summer! The very popular and life-redirecting Y outh E ntrepreneurial A cademy ( YEA)will run from June 4 through June 15 (2007) at Bishop State Community College (Southwest Campus, Bldg. 700). Classes will meet for 5 days each week from 8 a.m. until Noon . Get a head start on running a business. COST: $99.00. Enrollment is limited. Apply early. Includes trip to the Montgomery Jet Center ( Montgomery ). HIGH SCHOOLERS: Say "YEA" for the Summer! LEGO Course Descriptions

Junior LEGO Engineering                                    Ages 5 – 7                                    COST $125.00
Using very advanced LEGO parts and pieces, this class is appropriate for the youngest engineer.  Students build and work with models to investigate fixed and movable pulleys, gears and belt drives.  This is an integrated science and math class and is the first class leading up to the Robotics Academy, where children will build robots and program then with computer!

LEGO Elementary Engineering                   Ages 8 - 12                                          COST $125.00
Using very advanced LEGO® parts and pieces, this class is appropriate for children 8 years and up. Children will learn by doing. Course covers gears, levers, wheels, axles, structures, forces and simple machines. This is an integrated science and math class and is leading up to the Robotics Academy, where children will build robots and program them with computer!

LEGO Vehicles                                                  Ages 5 - 7                                                COST $125.00
Using very advanced LEGO® parts and pieces, this very exciting class has students building 14 different vehicles capped off with a final project. Some of these vehicles haven`t even been invented in the "real" world, yet! Projects include, Adjustable Crane, Bobcat, Flipper Car, Forklift, Inch- worm Car, Motor Cycle, Motorized Wheelchair, Rally (race) Car, Riding Mower, Scissor Car, Space Cruiser, Steamroller, and Submarine.

Battle Bots                                                            Ages 8 – 14                                          COST $125.00
Students learn to design and build their own motorized battle cars and other vehicles.  By using principles of simple and complex machines, gearing, and mechanical advantage, students then try flip, push, or smash their opponent’s battle vehicles.  Brain over brawn through applied physics.  Each team attempts to exploit the design weaknesses or the incidental mechanical advantage of their opponent’s bot.  Lessons demonstrate the use of mechanical lifts, nets, drills, ramps, and more to disable or overcome other bots.

(On-Line) Video Game Making Class      Ages 10 years and older                          COST $120.00
Learn how to design and modify your own exciting arcade style video games.  You’ll learn how to control characters, object and outcomes in your game then increase the difficulty level and add more features.  Graphics Design and Graphics animation will also be covered.  Learn how to design your own version if PacMan and several others.  This course is taught by Senior Instructor Rob Mayo of All About Learning, Inc.  You may read Rob’s bio by clicking on Ro’s bio.  This course is instructor facilitated.  You should have a fast internet connection which should be faster than dial-up.  If you have a DSL or Cable modem, then you should be fine.  Your computer must meet the minimum system requirements as detailed at the following link:  Video Game Making On-Line System requirements.  This class is 7 weeks in length.  Your 7 weeks begins when you register and pay for this class at this website.

(On-Line) Elementary Engineering          Ages 8 years and older                             COST $150.00
This class is an on-line version of our ever popular Elementary Engineering as an on-site class in a classroom.  This class is held on-line.  Once registered for this course, you will be sent a LEGOR kit with over 1,000 very advanced LEGOR parts and pieces.  When you receive the kit in the mail, then you are ready to take the class.  Yes, you keep the kit when the class is over!  The class consists of engineering theory and instruction plus 6 very complex building exercises.  This class is for the serious builder! 

• Reading & Math Camp -- If your child is not where he/she needs to be in reading and mathematics, this class is for you. Or, you might choose this class for enrichment or as a refresher course. The camp will run from July 9 through July 27 (2007) at Bishop State Community College (Southwest Campus, Bldg. 700). Classes will meet for 5 days each week from 8 a.m. until Noon . COST: $99.00. • Baseball Camp -- This is a great camp for your young star athlete who might like to play in high school, college and even try for professional baseball. In addition to general instruction, there will be special sessions on hitting, pitching and defensive skills. Early registration suggested. Ages 6 to 14. The camp will run from June 25 through June 28 (2007) at Bishop State Community College . Classes will meet for 4 days from 8 a.m. until Noon . COST: $50.00. • Certified Wedding Planner Camp -- Sign up now for an entrepreneurial experience to become a Certified Wedding Planner. Because this profession has recently seen an interest in the popular media with shows like "Who's wedding is it anyway", "Race to the Alter", and "Bridezillas", we have seen an increased interest in most of the U.S. as well as from other countries. Class limited to 25 students on first-come basis. Ages 18 and up. The camp will run from June 4 through June 28 (2007) at Bishop State Community College (Main Campus, new Business Technology Center ). Classes will meet Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Attempts will be made to provide actual experience with local weddings. Adjustments might be made to the schedule of classes to prepare everyone for the certification exam. Cost: $795.00. For more info, call 405-7114.
