700 Job Seekers Attend Employment Expo

March 18th, 2009 – More than 700 job seekers signed the roll at a recent Employment Exposition held March 17 at Bishop State Community College. This year's event saw 458 more attendees than last year. Twenty-four businesses and organizations participated and many of them accepted resumes and portfolios on the spot.

It was the fourth annual Employment Expo sponsored by the college. Participants included Alabama Department of Transportation, Altapointe Health Systems, Atlantic Marine Alabama, C & G Boatworks, Inc., Gulf States Shipbuilders Consortium, Inter-Tribal Council of Alabama, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Mercy Medical, Mobile County Personnel Board, Mobile County Public Schools System, Mobile Gas Service Corp., Mobile Works, NCO Financial Systems, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Restore Therapy Services, the University of South Alabama Hospitals, Troy University, Infirmary Health System, Gulf Coast Therapy, U.S. National Guard, Regions Bank, Prime America and Spherion.

With its skilled technical training programs, Bishop State Community College is positioned to produce a trained workforce for Mobile and southwest Alabama. Workers who have lost their jobs because of the economic crisis may already possess skills that could easily transfer into another field and Bishop State offers many programs and short-term courses that can provide that extra training.

The event was lead by Juliette Womack, Career Planning and Job Placement Coordinator in the Student Development Services Department. Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), a non-profit organization educating students on concepts like market economics, entrepreneurship, and business ethics through educational outreach projects, assisted with the event.
