Bishop State Holds High School Equivalency Diploma Ceremony
May 20th, 2008, Bishop State hosted a commencement ceremony for candidates receiving their high school equivalency diploma, or GED, on Sunday, May 18. The ceremony was held in the auditorium of the Baker-Gaines Central Campus located at 1365 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.
"I am excited for these candidates. They have an excellent opportunity for employment with all the jobs coming into Mobile in the next year," said Akareem Spears, director of Adult Education at Bishop State.
Forty-nine candidates received their GED at the ceremony. Pamela Patterson and Tequila McCall were selected from the graduating class to speak about the importance of receiving a GED in pursuing their personal goals. Student speakers were chosen as unique individuals in the program.
"We are extremely proud of our graduating students," said Spears. "But we also owe much of their success to the dedicated staff and the instructors who are essential to this process and the success of any GED graduate."
The Adult Education Program at Bishop State prepares students for the American Council of Education's GED Tests. The program educates students through instruction in math, language and reading. Bishop State offers free assessment testing and tutorial classes in order to prepare those planning to take the GED test.
