Bishop State Awards Top Honors to Daniel and Santos
May 12th, 2008 –
Bishop State awarded Brenda Daniel the Green-Knight Technical Award of Excellence and Djon-Iva Santos the James Browning Allen Outstanding Student Award; the college's highest academic and technical honors.
Santos pursued her associate in science degree while working part time at the Bishop State Learning assistance program. While at Bishop State, she was vice-president of Phi Theta Kappa Honor society and a member of the 2008 All-Alabama Academic Team.
"At first I had hoped to go to a four-year college, but when I researched Bishop State was closer and less expensive. After my first couple of classes, I knew I had made the right choice, the classes were small and had a personal atmosphere," said Santos. "Now that I'm moving on to a four-year (school), I'm a little scared, but I know I'm ready."
Santos graduated summa cum laude and plans to attend the University of South Alabama for a degree in psychology.
The James Browning Allen Outstanding Student Award, which is presented during commencement, is the college's highest honor presented each year to a student of the graduating class, based upon his/her academic achievements, honor achievements, extracurricular activities and citizenship.
Daniel pursued her associate in applied science degree focusing on commercial food service. A single parent of two sons, Tobias and Justin, Daniel maintained her grades as a full-time student while working full time during the week at Comcast and part time at Tyner's Catering on weekends "I attended class from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., worked at Comcast from noon to 9 p.m., then came home to go over Justin's homework. Sometimes I would not even start studying until midnight, "described Daniel." Scheduling was a challenge but I made it work and always found time to study."
She credits much of her success to the support all around from her sons, Comcast and her instructors.
"Comcast gave me flexibility in my work schedule for class, and Chef Herman Packer, my instructor and great mentor, kept me motivated," said Daniel. "Looking back, I sometimes wonder how I made it. It was my belief and strong faith in God that helped me to overcome all the challenges of working, studying and being a mom."
Daniel is now a baker for three Panera Bread locations and hopes to become a baker trainer in the near future. Eventually, she wants to attend pastry school.
The Green-Knight Technical Award of Excellence is presented during commencement to an outstanding graduate receiving a certificate in a technical program and maintaining a minimum cumulative average of 3.5.
Bishop State's graduation was held at the Mobile Civic Center on May 9. The commencement speaker was Dr. Belle Wheelan, president of the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
