Two Bishop State students honored at All-Alabama Academic Team Program
May 6th, 2008 – BTwo Bishop State Community College students were honored recently at the All-Alabama Academic Team Recognition Program held at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham, Ala.
Djon-Iva Santos of Mobile, who is a candidate for an associate in science degree during commencement scheduled for Friday evening, and Matthew Luker of Atmore were honored for their scholastic achievement. Students selected must possess a minimum GPA of 3.25, be involved in campus activities, and have completed a minimum of twelve (12) semester hours at the institution.
"We are very proud of the superb performance of these top students," Interim President Dr. James Lowe said. "These students represent the best of the best that our college has to offer."
Santos and Luker were honored along side of 46 other students from the state's community and technical colleges before an audience of 400 that included their parents and families and college presidents, deans, and faculty from throughout the Alabama Community College System, and representatives from several universities.
Community colleges allow students to stay close to home, get a strong academic foundation in a student-focused environment with small classes, and benefit from flexible class schedules, much lower tuition rates, and an articulation agreement that guarantees their coursework will transfer to any public college or university within the state.
The All-Alabama Academic Team Recognition Program was founded in 1995 to complement the All-USA National Academic Team Program sponsored by USA Today, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the American Association of Community Colleges.
