The Physical Therapist
Assistant is a skilled licensed health care worker who carries out
patient treatment under the supervision and direction of the physical
therapist. The physical therapist assistant provides physical therapy
services to decrease pain, increase mobility and increase function. The
Physical Therapist Assistant Program consists of general education and
physical therapy courses. The physical therapy courses are designed to
utilize information gained in general education courses and to provide
knowledge and skills to fulfill the objectives of the program.
Concurrent theoretical and clinical experiences enhance the relation of
theory to practice for the student. Clinical experience is provided in a
variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitation agencies,
schools, private offices, and nursing homes. The freshman year consists
of twenty-seven (27) semester hours of general education prerequisites.
Physical therapy course work begins in the sophomore year and totals
forty-two (42) semester hours. The course work is cumulative. Student
must make at least a grade of 77 in each course if the student is to
advance. |

Students may repeat
a course once if the 77 grade point average is not earned. Upon
successful completion of the program, the student is awarded an
Associate in Applied Science degree and may be eligible to take the
licensure examination given by the Alabama and other State Boards of
Physical Therapy. In the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, there may
be policies and procedures that are different from or take precedence
over general policies listed for other programs and the College.
Students must refer to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Student
Handbook for specific policies governing the Physical Therapist
Assistant Program. The Physical Therapist Assistant student shall
comply with the ethical, moral, and behavior standards
established by the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, the policies
and procedures of the College, as well as the laws established by the
Alabama Board of Physical Therapy. Failure to comply with these
standards and laws may result in dismissal from the program an/or denial
to take the licensure examination given by Alabama and other State
Boards of Physical Therapy.
