  Physical Therapy Assistant

The Physical Therapist Assistant is a skilled licensed health care worker who carries out patient treatment under the supervision and direction of the physical therapist. The physical therapist assistant provides physical therapy services to decrease pain, increase mobility and increase function. The Physical Therapist Assistant Program consists of general education and physical therapy courses. The physical therapy courses are designed to utilize information gained in general education courses and to provide knowledge and skills to fulfill the objectives of the program. Concurrent theoretical and clinical experiences enhance the relation of theory to practice for the student. Clinical experience is provided in a variety of settings including hospitals, rehabilitation agencies, schools, private offices, and nursing homes. The freshman year consists of twenty-seven (27) semester hours of general education prerequisites. Physical therapy course work begins in the sophomore year and totals forty-two (42) semester hours. The course work is cumulative. Student must make at least a grade of 77 in each course if the student is to advance.

 
 
 

Students may repeat a course once if the 77 grade point average is not earned. Upon successful completion of the program, the student is awarded an Associate in Applied Science degree and may be eligible to take the licensure examination given by the Alabama and other State Boards of Physical Therapy. In the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, there may be policies and procedures that are different from or take precedence over general policies listed for other programs and the College. Students must refer to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Student Handbook for specific policies governing the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. The Physical Therapist Assistant student shall comply with the ethical, moral, and behavior standards established by the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, the policies and procedures of the College, as well as the laws established by the Alabama Board of Physical Therapy. Failure to comply with these standards and laws may result in dismissal from the program an/or denial to take the licensure examination given by Alabama and other State Boards of Physical Therapy.
