Funeral Services

The Bishop State Community College associate in applied science degree in funeral service education is designed to provide the best possible learning experiences for students interested in funeral service education and for advancement in the funeral service profession. The central aim of the funeral service education program is recognition of the importance of funeral service education personnel as (1) members of a human services profession, (2) members of the community in which they serve, (3) participants in the relationship between bereaved families and those engaged in the funeral service profession, (4) professionals knowledgeable of and compliant with federal, state and local regulatory guidelines, as well as (5) professionals sensitive to the responsibility for public health, safety and welfare in caring for human remains.

The objectives of the Funeral Service Education Program are to:

• Enlarge the background and knowledge of students about the funeral service profession

• Educate students in every phase of funeral service, and to help enable them to develop the proficiency and skills necessary of the profession

• Educate students concerning the responsibilities of the funeral service profession to the community at large

• Emphasize high standards of ethical conduct

• Provide a curriculum at the post secondary level of instruction

• Encourage research in the field of funeral service


Admission to the Funeral Service Education Program is accomplished by completing the Application for Admission to the College (please contact the Admissions Office). Each student is strongly encouraged, but not required, to receive the Hepatitis-B vaccine prior to enrolling in the Funeral Service Education Program. Current pricing and health information should be available through the students’ local health department or private physician.

The Funeral Service Education Program includes academic courses and clinical experience in both funeral directing and embalming for the future embalmer and funeral director.

Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from clinical sites, as well as meals. Graduates are eligible to sit for the International Conference of Funeral Service Examination Boards, Inc. NATIONAL BOARD EXAMINATION and/or STATE BOARD EXAMINATION.

State licensure requirements vary from state to state and applicants must meet all state requirements. For complete licensure requirement, students should contact the State Board of Funeral Service in the state in which they intend to practice.
