Congratulations to the
Paramedic Class of 2005 - 100% Pass Rate on the National Registry!
Emergency Medical Technicians, (EMT’s) and Paramedics
are licensed medical professionals who provide emergency medical
care to the sick and injured in an effort to promote health, alleviate
suffering and conserve human life.

Bishop State Community College offers two levels of EMS
training and education. The Basic level is a one semester program
modeled after the Department of Transportation curriculum for the
Emergency Medical Technician. Upon completion of course work, graduates
are eligible to sit for the National Registry examination. Successful
passage of the exam results in an Alabama Basic EMT license.
The Paramedic level of education is a four semester
program. Students may select from courses of study resulting in either a
Paramedic Certificate or an Associate in Applied Science degree.
Successful program completion allows the student to take the National
Registry exam for licensure as a Paramedic.
Both levels of EMS education consist of four components:
didactic instruction, skills laboratory, clinical evaluation, and field
internship. Students must achieve a 75% or better in all EMS course work
to advance within the program. The EMS program administration and
faculty are dedicated to provide the best possible learning experience
for students interested in pursuing a career as an EMT or Paramedic. |

The EMS career
field is “expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through
2010. Population growth and urbanization will increase the demand for
full-time paid EMTs and Paramedics. In addition, a large segment of the
population – the aging baby boomers- will further spur demand of EMT
services, as they become more likely to have medical emergencies.”
“Competition will
be greater for jobs where salaries and benefits tend to be slightly
better. Opportunities will be best for those who have advanced
certifications, such as EMT-Paramedics.”

Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook
Handbook.
