Health Information Technology and Medical Transcription
Health Information Technology (HIT)

The HIT program at Bishop State provides qualified health information practitioners in the health care community, to promote patient care, management, and technology within the healthcare team.

As a Health Information Technologist...you will work daily with the health care team of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who respect the HIT specialist as the authority on medical data. Health Information Technicians compile, analyze and evaluate health information, including maintaining and using health data, controlling the use and release of health information and supervising staff. Unlike most health professionals, Health Information Technicians are not restricted by state licensure. Health Information Technicians may find employment in various settings, including, but not limited to, hospitals, nursing homes, physician offices, mental health facilities, law firms, consulting firms, insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, local and state governmental agencies, research and education centers, HMO’s clinics and information system vendors.

Medical Transcription

As a Medical Transcriptionist...you will provide an important service to both physicians and patients by transcribing (typing) dictated medical reports that document a patient’s medical care and condition. These may include, but not limited to, history and physical examinations, consultations, operative reports, discharge summaries. Medical transcriptionists transcribe reports from a variety of medical specialties. Each day work presents a unique challenge and opportunity for continuing medical education. A medical transcriptionist must employ a knowledge of English, grammar, punctuation, editing and typing skills.
